Weren't the additional parking lights simply to define the size of your
vehicle if your headlight bulb burned out?

This way an oncoming motorist would see you as a four wheeled vehicle
versus a motorcycle and in theory give ya some room.

Also for parking on the side of the road and defining you as a parked car
but occupied - thus hopefully keeping you from getting run over. The exact
reason it is illegal in some places to drive with your parking lights only.
In theory everybody might think you were sitting still when in fact you
were moving! Surprise!
