Dear Vanagon List Members:

I wouldn't be too surprised if some of you remember me from some years back, but then again, I would be far less surprised if most of you don't. I hung about the list about three to five years ago while I was in college -- a long time ago, considering that I've been out of college for just about two years now. In any case, if any of you remember seeing some of those filksongs that now reside on vanagon.com wander across the list on Fridays -- those were mine. (See http://www.vanagon.com/fun/songs/ -- Ron, if you're on the list right now, would you be so kind as to update my last name? Much appreciated!)

I don't have a Vanagon just yet, alas (ah, life) -- I must admit that to you all right now! -- but I've decided to rejoin you all because it looks like that there won't be much time (if all goes as planned) until I do. I have the opportunity to salvage a maroon '90 Westy, in need of an engine swap and some minor repairs, from being donated to charity. The current owner is willing to give it; who am I to let the opportunity pass me up?

I'm hoping to make the trip to California this summer [from St. Louis, MO] to get it, if nothing gets in the way; in addition to the engine, it needs new power window motors, a poptop sunroof replacement, and an a/c leak fix. Current plan: haul a 1.9L out there in the back of an '86 Vanagon, do the swap, drive home...

So I've decided that a few months' exposure to the wisdom here before making the trip would be a good idea. :) Any and all comments about this trip, including how insane I am, welcome! And anyone who would like to send personal e-mail is welcome to do it.

I am, however, also the owner of a 2000 Golf GLS, white; I love the car. The Vanagon will be replacing our other car, a yellow 1994 Dodge Colt hatchback that's on its last legs (poor thing). I'm looking forward to many happy trips in it.

I do apologize if I've slipped up a bit and somehow missed any accepted format that may have been adopted for this sort of message in the intervening time, but I wish you all a good evening, anyhow.

-- Jennifer Scott, St. Louis, MO
