<< Hi Volks,

Little Vanagon content here but......to you experienced volks out there........ I want to ship about 4 heavy (I think under 40lbs but at least 40" x8"x8" ) boxes from Manchester England to NE Iowa. Maybe able to get some great priced Westy and other stuff from a private party. The rates for UPS are INSANE and won't bother if I can't get it here cheaper! Anybody know of a cheap (but insured) slow boat coming to the US that can get them here.

Cheers,

Katy >>

The freight consolidation is the only way to go. Get a written quote and beware of hidden charges. Freight companies have minimum charges and charge dimensional weight on larger items.

However, once it gets here you could run into problems.

What is the value of the items, what are the made of and where were they produced?

If this is for personal use, and is under $1,250 (I think), you should be able to clear this through US Customs yourself. You can check with your lo cal customs official for more clarification. Textiles have a $250 limit.

If you are importing as a business or exceed the personal limit you may need to hire a customs broker, or post a bond. Also keep in mind that items produced in some countries can't be imported without a quota visa, which is only available from the country where the item was produced.
