Don, Some say yes, some say no. I feel that they are they are there for a reason, to spread the bead to assist in locking the rubber to the glass and surrounding metal. I replaced mine with new. No leaks, looks good. This has been an on going subject, of accute impasse, on the list for some time. I would recommend replacing them if you don't like the dull chrome, or leave them, and just paint them black.
