Ahh...*those* vents -- they don't close. They're controlled by the bottom lever on the heater panel -- you can shut them off if needed by stuffing rags into the hole in the doorframe that feeds them.

I sorta thought the previous correspondent was talking about the vents in the sides of the dash.
