I had a 1979 Audi Fox Wagon with a 1.5L I4 in it with over 400,000km on the clock - this went into my Syncro during the initial prototyping of my kit. The engine is currently sitting on my garage floor. Compression is 140-140-135-135 - not bad for an engine with almost a half million kilometers. On several occasions when it was nearing the end of it's stay in my Syncro I revved it up to around 8000 RPM and held it there... no problems! On the whole I think the I4s will last 500,000 km with regular oil changes and good general maintained.

How about the I-4 from VW? I've put over 200K miles on mine, a friend put over 227 K miles on his, another is working on 250K miles and all that with just semi-regular oil changes and maintenance. Mine saw over 50K miles of nothing but pizza delivery and my friends over 100K miles of pizza delivery.

By the way, my Jetta is still on the road accumulating more miles under a different lead-footed owner.

Chris,
