Look for little inconsistencies, I was missing the spring under the distributor and it caused erratic idel and misfire. Corrected it worked great.

If you check your injectors, make up a jumper wire TEN FEET LONG and a fuel hose TEN FEET LONG and perform this test well away from your engine compartment (I had a fire by trying it in the engine compartment).

I have had very good service out of an 83 Aircooled. It is not uncommon to put 10,000 miles on it without opening the engine compartment.
