The Coolant temperature gage has an LED in the middle of it ...the early water cooled vans with diesel engine did not have a level sensor ...not sure about gas engines.

So, If I were to loose a hose and coolant, I presume my gage would respond by showing a lower temperature as the coolant drains out of the block and the temperature sensor gets to measure hot air - & I would drive merrirly on until the engine siezes! - unless I'm lucky enough to see steam thru the rear view mirror.

I guess this is why VW added the level sensor too.

At least witht he engine in front of you, i.e. as in a car, the driver would have a better chance of realising things were wrong ...steam!

Anyone rigged up any 'DIY" schemes to cover this 'Design Oversight'!?

Steve
