That would be because the 1156 is a 32 candlepower bulb exactly like your brakelight bulb. In fact your brake light (and turn signal) bulbs no doubt *are* 1156. So the problem is that in essence you'll be driving around with brake lights on all the time.

Probably not but that would depend on VW -- I can tell you that putting in a 50-watt backup light will lead to melting/warping of the whole taillight assembly. :(
