I'm reinstalling the upper control arm, with new bushings, on my 1983 Westphalia, and there is something I don't understand about using thicker slotted washers to take up play. The references I've seen(in the list archives) to checking bushing play(slop) don't make sense to me. ie...."the bushing shouldn't have more than .020" slop side to side before you tighten the bolt" What kind of slop is this? The bushings fit tight in the holes that they are pressed into, so no slop there. The pivot bolt is a little loose where it passes through the bushings, but I don't think this is the above mentioned "slop". If you grab the upper control arm, with the pivot bolt nut loose you can move the bushing end of the control arm left and right a little...that could be it but it doesn't seem like a thicker slotted washer would prevent the left and right play. Can someone enlighten me on this? Thanks, John |
