I subscribe to a few mailing lists, however, the Vanagon list is the only one that I subscribe to that has SPAM as part of its postings. I'm not understanding why this problem seems to be only effecting the Vanagon list. Is this because the other lists have better mailing software that deletes the SPAM, or because they are closed lists? I don't see what the downside is to closing the list - aside from the fact that it means lots more work to our dedicated list administrator. Perhaps it might be a help if someone posted the pros and cons to closing the list so people could make an informed decision? I have noticed on some lists, you have to be subscribed in order to post - and as part of the subscription process, your email address is verified. This seems to eliminate SPAM postings. This does not keep people from viewing the list and posts, the only restriction is that they have to be a member to post. Yes, you do add to the hassle factor this way, but I think it is worth it to eliminate the SPAM. One other thing to consider - as the people who harvest emails addresses pass on that the vanagon list is a valid place to post SPAM to other SPAMMERS, I would think that over time the SPAM postings will increase. my 1 and a half cents worth Todd '88 Westy |
