Subject: gear whine-'85 Westy 4spd manual
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

Hi All,

My question is NOT about which wine is best served to your guests with a pilot bearing marinated in a hypoid gear reduction sauce (though some have suggested a red "line" varietal).

What I want to know is the source of this gear WHINE I hear when decelerating. I don't hear it when accelerating, or coasting. Just when when my foot is off the gas and the speed of the engine is slowing the van down (I think this is called engine braking). Maybe some of you have experienced this and can offer some advice? Maybe it isn't even gear whine but it's quite loud and that's the best way I could describe it. The (original) 4 spd manual tranny has 167K miles.

Thanks, Scott '85 Westy "Pearl"
