Jay and others who are leaving the list,

Instead of leaving the list, folks, why not use some of the easily available features of the software and most ISP's to protect your children. Leaving the list is such drastic reactions when there are such simple solutions.

1) Why not set up a filter that directs all of your Vanagon email to a separate subfolder. Sure the 7 year old can go looking for it and find it, but it won't jump in her face. And, at least with Netscape, if you set up a subfolder, e.g., Automobiles, in your inbox, and then a subfolder of that, Vanagons, and filter all mail from Gerry into the Vanagon subfolder, no one will even see the little green arrow that indicates that there is new mail in the Vanagon folder.

2) Most ISP's let you have at least 2 email accounts for the monthly fee that you pay. Why not set up 2 accounts and have grammy and others with whom you want your children to communicate use that address, while you get your email on the other address. Or set up an account with one of the free services and do all of your email there.

If people reacted like this to all of the other difficulties of life, they would have to retreat to a cave in the mountains. Do you sell your TV because there are some unacceptable shows aired? Sell your car because there are automobile accidents? Stay inside because there are sexually oriented images on billboards? Never go to a bookstore because there might be a magazine or book with sexually oriented material in it? Never go out in public because you might hear someone use unacceptable language or see someone dressed in a sexually revealing manner?

What do you do as a precaution if you get some undesirable spam from some other source straight to your inbox? Sign off the internet altogether?
