Yes my '84 has an AFM too.

(hangs head in shame)

I have been working a lot recently on Jetta's which have the CIS system.
Actually the real reason I screwed up is that since I got mine running right, its been so reliable that I havent been in the engine compartment and I forgot what it looks like in there.
The comments I made about the aux air valve are still good though.    (grovelling)
