Subject: Engine Swap
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Hello List, I am back after about a year off the list, because the approaching nice weather here in Pennsylvania has made me realize how much I like my vanagon westy compared to the 73 Type 2 I am currently driving. THis has led to me trying to figure out which engine plan I need to go with to revive her. First if anyone knows the estimated cost to rebuild a 1.6l Diesel engine(which mine is a 1982 Diesel Westy) at home, or a place to send mine to be rebuilt, or a place to buy a new or rebuilt. Also does a 1.6l diesel from a vw rabbit or pick-up work if the unique parts from the vanagon are used in addition to the rabbit engine. I know this is a long post but please stay with me, I really need help on this one. Also, does anyone know if the fast forward 1.8l gas or larger kit will work with the diesel vanagons. Addtionally, if someone could tell me the difference in horsepower between the 1.9l and 1.6l diesel engines without turbo, and better yet if anyone has used the kit sold by Ken Wilfy at Van-again to swap the 1.6l diesel with the remachined 1.9l NA diesel. How hard is it to swap the 1.9l diesel and how much power difference does it make. And finally, what other options do I have to upgrade this underpowered vanagon or in the long run will it just pay off to keep the smaller engine. I am considering both cost now and down the road. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Seth
