Loretta,

You should really check-out a double cab in person before seriously considering buying one. It will not be as comfortable or powerful as your GMC, but you will go up the coolness scale as far as I'm concerned.

Winkler used to make a hard fiberglass shell for the double cab which essentially replaced the rear and side gates with a box that looks like a transporter. It looks like it used a Vanagon rear door. Per the Winkler distributor in the US, they are no longer available due to lack of demand.

A couple of fellow double cab owners in my area are contemplating having hardshells manufactured but one which sits on top on the existing gates instead of taking them off. If it ever gets off the ground, I will post on the list.

One last thing to take into consideration is the rear cargo area of the double cabs and single cabs are not weather tight around the gates. Any shell installed there would either have to incorporate a lower shell or just use it as a semi-weather tight cover.

Anyone wanting to see a Vanagon Double Cab in person should contact one of the other double cab owners in your area. If you're in Northern California, I'll be happy to show you My 16" Syncro Doka.
