Before you write the engine off, consider doing a compression test. This
will tell you if it really is the rings. I have a 1.6TD and a 1.9D that
both burn incredible amounts of oil but still do not blow oil out the filler
neck. If you have high crankcase pressure, there is a possibility that
turbo pressure is making its way into the crankcase through the breather
system.

Subject: questions putting in turbo diesel
I tried posting this earlier but for some reason the message came back
to me so I will try again,
I just found out my diesel engine is probably toast. The mechanic said
there is an extreme amount of pressure, so much so that oil actually
gushes out the oil filler neck if the caps not on. Actually it gushes
out even if the top is on, it just does it through the hole for the
dipstick. For those of you at Everybus you will remember we were the
blue turbo diesel with the oil spewed all over the back of our bus. Yes
it made it to every bus but I don't want to drive it anymore because it
smokes sssoooo bad.
Anyway I'm not sure I want to rebuild this engine. If you remember I got
the bus for $150. but it had been sitting for around 3-4 years. I would
like to put in a 1.6TD or 1.9TD. I'm sure someone out there has made
this swap before. I need all the information I can get. Where do I even
get the engine. Do I but it new or rebuilt. Whats the difference between
the 1.6 and the 1.9. Not knowing that the engine was going to have to be
changed soon, and not having second gear, we bought a new transmission
also. Now I'm not sure that the gear ratio on the new tranny will be ok
for a 1.6 or a 1.9. I'm not sure the turbo I have on my bus now even
works or not. The mechanic said it looked like it was an aftermarket
turbo.
I'm not opposed to putting money in the bus since it is in excellent
shape. But I think my husband will wind up putting the new engine in the
bus himself and with the help of some local diesel owners.
Any help would be appreciated.
