Subject: Re: Tire Rack Steel Mercedes wheel for Syncro & Vanagon
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Hi List, To answer the questions that seem to be a lot of guessing at this point, I thought I would throw my 2 cents in.

I know that I'm not the only one out here with Mercedes steel wheels on my Vanagon, yet I still haven't talked to anybody else who does. Mine are unusual, in that they seem to be off of a grey market import car & none of the mercedes junkyards seem to believe they exist. Let me back up for a second...

I have, on my 1990 Syncro, 4 MBZ 15 x 7 STEEL wheels. I have tried for 2 years to find a 5th so I can have a spare, but with no luck. Lots of leads, thanks to list members, but not a 5th in sight. So, YES, I have 15 " MBZ STEEL wheels on my Vanagon. YES, they DO fit with no modifications (except for removing the useless alignment bolts on the rear drums), & YES, they bolt on with the stock wheel nuts!

Based on my actual experience with actual MBZ steel wheels, I'm going to go out on a limb here & recommend that anyone interested, go ahead & buy some from Tire Rack at the reasonable $40. They should work without trouble. Also, I would like to thank whoever started this thread by alerting us to this great discovery!

As I mentioned, mine are 15 x 7 (inches) w/ a ET25 offset & the Tire Rack's are 15 x 6.5 w/ a ET37. I have ordered one for my long over due spare. The cost for shipping to Seattle is $10.00. If you all are willing to wait a week or so, I will report back when I get the new one & match it up with my existing wheels to see if the lug holes are the same & if they work with the stock nuts.

I now have an extra 15" Audi Turbo alloy that I was going to use for my spare. If anybody is interested in purchasing it for their Vanagon, (or Audi), please email me.

I hope this clears things up for those of you considering the step up to lower RPMs.

Thanks, David K Seattle 1990 15' Syncro
