Believe it or not i might actually be able to be of some help here.  It's
about time!

I just went through this myself.  I have an 85 gl westfalia which has a
digital clock in the centre and a tach on the right where some have an
analog clock.  The good news is they all use the same bulb, that you can get
from the dealer for less than two bucks each.  The same bulb goes over the
speedo, tach, in the centre console where the warning lights are (on my 85
at least) and behind the small digital clock.  my clock was dark too, and
believe it or not it's a bulb from behind that backlights it.  Who would've
thought.

i believe you have to twist the bulb a quarter turn counterclockwise to
remove it, the opposite to install it.  i couldn't get it with my fingers
(it was too tight) so i used a set of pliers gently.  No problemo.

Keep in mind this is for an 85.  I am assuming they are the same, but if not
then hopefully someone else can help.
