To date... all my reactions to the van have been positive. I Got a typical reaction the other night in fact.
Saturday night I drove to Home Depot. I like to back in to spots because all the cubords of the westy really cut into my rear visbility (I've got to buy one of those fancy lens things for the back window)and I think its safer leaving with a clear view than parking with one. I have actually gotten REALLY good at it, mostly from parking in my carport which some of my neighbours with the same room and a normal sized car can't do (or at least don't feel like it).
But I digress... I was backing into a parking spot when I saw a guy with a shoping cart that I was worried might try to go behind me so I paused. He just stopped pushing the cart and looked at me.
I figured he was just being nice and waiting for me to park so I kept going (while keeping my eye on him just in case).
Anyway once I got into the spot and started toward the store he stopped and asked me all kinds of questions about it. Did I like it? how does the top work? Where did I buy it? How much are they? What powers the fridge? etc. He said he was going back to school and was considering getting one. He used to own a VW bug so I told him from a speed and acceleration standpoint my Vanagon was more or less on par with a '77-'78 bug. I told him about the Vanagon list, he thanked me and wished each other a good evening.
So goes a typical experience. Most people are curious about them and know someone who used to have one or still does. To be sure most experiences are with people who secretly (or not so secretly) want one. Maybe those two kids got caught behind a diesel on a two lane mountain road with no room to pass...
Thanks,
Chris
