I think the Wave/No Wave deal between east and west coast may have something to do with vanagon populations in the respective areas. Here in AR, there are so few of them,everyone waves. With all of them on the west coast, maybe the owners would end up with repetitive stress disorder if they waved to every bay/splittie/waterboxer they saw.

I compare this to my canoe/kayak hobby/business. In AR, there aren't that many kayaks and canoes, so when we drive by one another with boats on top of thecar, we wave(except Colemans!!). However, go to the Youghigheny, Nantahala, Ocoee, or other highly populated boater mecca, and they will look at you strangely. perhaps the waving reflex is stimulated by the unusual, not the usual.
