<<A while ago someone said that Westy people seemed snooty and didn't wave to them -- my experience (driving a Westy) is the opposite, that non-Westy people are considerably less likely to wave. Is it possible that each sub-population preferentially waves to its own members? I'm quite indiscriminate myself, I'm so pleased when I see one at all...>>

I have to admit, I've noticed this phenomenon myself. I wave at all VWs I see. Late H20 cars tend to ignore me, not surprisingly. I sometimes get waves from dieselheads, that catch Donder puffing away off a traffic light or up a hill. Oddly enough, I have not yet gotten a return wave from a Westy owner. I've talked to a few in parking lots, but generally I catch a hint of disdain when I mention my three Vanagons, and that all are 7-seater passenger vans. Passenger van owners, on the other hand, wave like maniacs, and love to shoot the breeze about our seibensitzers (sp?) You're probably on to something Dave. They're all Vanagons, though. I'll just keep wavin'.
