I just took my driveshaft out this weekend and I seem to remember it only rotated about 1/8" - 1/4" when connected. As others have suggested, I would start there. Once the shaft is out you can check the u-joints by making sure they are tight but turn freely. If they're shot, you can check the archives for _lots_ of postings about u-joint replacement.
