The notch when lined up with the case parting line gives factory specified timing (5 ATDC for 1.9l). The depression gives TDC. When you buy a pulley it has only the depression; you're supposed to put the notch in yourself depending on the application. The depression is read from its own center (not as hard as it sounds.
