Subject: Pop top - a weighty problem
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Camping season is upon us here in New England! Another year older both the Westy and myself and it's getting increasingly more difficult to lift the pop top. When we first had the van I could lift it easily, then one day while driving we heard a "sproing", like the sound of a large spring breaking but didn't know where it came from. Now in retrospect, I think it was whatever the tensioner is (or was) on the inside of the support bracket that lifts the top.

When I looked on my ETKA disc I found the diagram for the lift assembly but not all the parts are still available, part illustration #23 looks like it could be some type of spring that is wound around a shaft, inserted inside the tubing but there is no mention of it. I also noticed a "gas filled strut" system illustrated but not I think that may have been for the Eurovan campers only.

To cut to the chase, has anyone found a way to make lifting the pop to easier once the spring died? As usual, any help is greatly appreciated.
