The air in the exhaust from the leak causes the O2 sensor to think
the engine is running lean and tells the computer to richen the
mixture.  Cold rich engines are sluggish.

Subject: 1987 westy power lag when cold?

Hey ya,

I was test driving an 87 westy today and noticed that there was a abnormally
long lag between getting on the power and actually feeling the engine kick
in (about 1 second).  The engine was cold and I was going up a "medium"
hill.  The exhaust had a small leak (kinda like a kid blowing on your cheek
at idle)....

Is the exhaust leak to blame?  Or is this a sign of something more sinister
that could be happening inside the guts? (the engine was rebuilt in 1995 and
there are about 50K on it).
