This is a common problem. The grommets on top of the tank dry out and cause the leaks. There are 3 small ones and one large one for the filler pipe. Then there's also the gasket for the sender.

You gotta change them out or just never fill up your tank. All the parts are available from your local VW dealer. Or if you want to do it all in one shot, I believe Ken @ VanAgain sells a complete change-out kit.
