Replace the clutch and related parts along with the transmission front seal. New fuel lines and maybe a pressure regulator are good insurance with a new engine. Failure of either can cause immediate destruction, and they are both 15 years old now. Use the proper VW self locking nuts when attaching the exhaust to the engine, you will thank yourself later. Use single weight 30w or 40w HD mineral based oil for the first 3000 miles during break in. Be sure to avoid long trips the first 1000 miles, "stop and go" around town trips are best for breaking in a new engine. Last, but not least, install the VDO oil pressure gauge and monitor it! -- Stuart MacMillan Seattle '84 Vanagon Westfalia w/2.1 '65 MGB (Daily driver since 1969) '74 MGB GT (Restoring sloooowly) Personal mechanic for: '70 MGB GT (Daughter's) Assisting on Restoration (and spending OPM): '72 MGB GT (Was daughter's, now son's) '64 MGB (Son's) Stripped and gone but their parts live on: '68 MGB, '73 MGB, '67 MGB GT |
