Larry, may be it is a filter or a screen. I buy the kit from Ken Wilford at Van-Again and give it to my mechanic to install when he does the annual transmission fluid change. I don't look inside the box, but I must be doing something right as my '98 Pontiac uses the same type of ATF and the stuff on the dipstick on my Vanagon looks and smells much better than the fluid in the Pontiac.
