A couple of years ago, my daughter and I spent most of the summer fixing the
automatic trans on an 84.  Bought a used one from a junkyard, put it in and it
was no good.  Returned it and started looking for another.  Decided to try
rebuilding the original and went back to the junkyard and bought the bad one
for spare parts for $100.  Spent another $400 or so for parts from the dealer
and getting the torque converter rebuilt.  Most of the useful info came from a
Bentley Rabbit Manual.
  By the time we finally got it right, we had done 4 cycles of remove and
install and had learned a lot.  The valve body is a strange and mysterious
thing!
  The following summer we replaced the AT in a Saab 900 for her. ( A lot more
work to put in.)
