Where you be? Carbs in California is the kiss of death. You will not get it through the CARB inspection. All US vanagons had FI. (as far as I know).

Parts is pretty easy. No worse than your 83 (watercooled I suspect?). Perhaps even easier as the 83 1/2 was kinda a one off in the cooling system.

Of course if it is carbed, you can pull a FI system from a junkyard bus and learn the real ins and outs of the injection system!

Worse case, you can take many interior parts off and make your 83 a 'hardtop westy'.
