I've come close to driving these two vehicles. I drove Ray Hunnam's Subaru conversion and my van is upgraded with the ECU chip, MSDS intake, and Stebro turbo muffler. No ratio rockers or Lilly mods though, didn't want to push it with my old engine.

The Subaru conversion really goes--plenty of power across the rpm range in all gears. It's like a different vehicle. Note that Ray has the 6-cylinder XT6 engine and his van is a Transporter and weighs substantially less than my syncro Westfalia.

The improvements to my 2.1l are incremental but noticeable and worth the expense I think. There's quite a bit more power in the high end (no prob cruising at 75mph on a flat freeway now). It's still not what you would call zippy though ;)
