Hi,

I know a plumber at the university that has a "flocking" business on the
side. I asked him about reflocking my poptop and here is a very short
summary of what he told me:

-its a pain to remove all the old flocking. Can use solvents, mild
abrasives, heat and scraping or a combination.
-to do a good job you will have to remove the top (and the canvas)
-his flocking is applied (via a special applicator, not a hobby shop thing)
onto an epoxy coating that is sprayed onto the surface being flocked. The
epoxy is the glue that the flocking sticks to as it is shot out of the
applicator. There is a short working time for this process.
-the flocking fibers themselves are synthetic and (so he claims) do not
harbour mildew like the stock material.
-its not inexpensive

He does nice work, his hobby is old street rods and he has done a few custom
interiors with the flocking, making nice designs with various flock colours.


After talking to him, i decided to forgo reflocking and i scrubbed as much
of the old loose flock from my poptop as I could (used soapy, bleachy
water).

I have this untested idea of somehow attaching insulated panels (washable
fabric covered) to the top, maybe even having one side foil faced to either
reflect IR radiation in or away :)
