During my last year trip to Kern river for canoe and kayak races i saw many vehicles with racks for carrying canoes and kayaks, some of them "home made", including Vanagon with roof rack made for carrying canoes.I looked at it and it had rear round bar mounted in pillow block bearings on both sides and covered with some kind of plastic. This made it easy to roll canoe up and forward. Front bar was stationary. I myself have home made hitch with 2" receiver and use hitch bike rack that can carry 4 bikes. It is by far more convenient to carry bikes with hitch rack than on the roof. It is cheaper too(rack itself). I also have "artificial gutters" on my Westy pop up roof and can mount roof racks. These can be used to carry kayaks using either thule or yakima kayak mounts or home made hard foam pads. Leon 85 Subwagen Westy
