I haven't had the chance to carry much in my Caravelle, since the trans blew shortly after buying it. But I have carried 16 passengers in a friend's 62 Split, and probably way over a ton of river boulders in my 57. The 57 also carried a Honda CB750 K2 and most of my other belongings in one go; another time it carried both a Honda CB450 K6, an SL100 and the rest of the space was jammed full of other stuff (CB450s are about as heavy as CB750s). These 2 last trips were in the order of 450mi or so, driven at 50-70mph. Now, I wonder what the World's Dumbest Guy would have loaded his Vanagon up with, had he replaced his bronze Jetta with one?
