Subject: Temp I sensor
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

I wonder what the symptoms are when the Temp I sensor goes bad. Does the sensors resistance only change with air temperature? When the van runs as it should, the voltage across it measures in the range 1.25 - 1.50 volts as measured by the digitool (Edmonton temperatures). However, my 85 vanagon has developed a nasty intermittent problem. Once in a while the engine will completely lose power. It will idle rough but when put in gear it will sputter and backfire and simply won't go. After restarting, it will be a bit better, and I can usually limp home, sometimes it will improve as I go faster and go back to almost normal. When measuring the Temp I sensor during the rough running, the voltage is only about 0.5 to 0.8 Volts. Once I get the van running again with power, by restarting, the voltage is about 0.9 volts but still not what it should be for the temperatures here. Also the O2 reading will go up above 1 volt and not cycle during the rough running. The Temp II sensor is as it should at about 0.125 volts when engine is hot. AFM readings also check out. So I suspect it is the Temp I sensor that's on the fritz. (What else could change the reading so drastically?)

Anyway, pardon the lengthy description.

Also, do I have to get a new AFM meter, or can one get the Temp I sensor independently?

If anyone cares to comment, please do. I will appreciate it.

Thanks

Alfred 85 Westy
