You must have had a bad fuel pump!  I have set a few customers up with
CIS-Motronic (Audi 80 2.0L) and the pump worked fine.


CIS-Motronic    6.6BAR  95 PSI
CIS-E                   5.6BAR  82 PSI
CIS                     5.4BAR  78 PSI
Digifant II             2.5BAR  36 PSI


The Vanagon's Digifant and Digjet engines are close to the Digifant II
system found in the Golf and Jetta.
