I agree with some of what you said, but you must have a very different van than
me. I have an 85 Westy Auto, I get 16.2 MPG without fail. All is in good shape,
even low emissions test results. Power is not so good due to lots of weight and
low HP, but all in all I love my Vanagon. I have taken it off daily statis and
drive my truck now. It is nice to have 190PH, 220ftlbs Torque and still get
26MPG hot rodding it. (95 Toyota Tacoma 3400 4cam 24 valve, 5sp). If I could
only put that engine into the Vanagon. I do however have a 2.0l Jetta ABA block
on my engine stand I am going to transplant into the van soon, should help.
I would never say that a Vanagon Westy gets good gas mileage, but I will keep
mine anyway.
