CA testing has two tests - assuming that you get the 'standard' smog test. Every year a small percentage of what CA thinks are 'high polluters' get randomly selected to have a dynamometer test which is more rigorous.

Anyway, the standards for the standard smog are (This is for a 1988 vanagon - standards vary by year of manufacturer)

2500 RPM test maximum allowable:

HC PPM 180 CO % 1.0

Idle RPM maximum allowable

HC PPM 120 CO % 1.0
