I've had mine now for 3 (or 4?) years now which I purchased from our fellow list member Chris Jordan. The 87GL was posted on this list and I promptly called him for the details. One thing led to another and I was on my way from Toronto, Canada in my 87 Golf diesel with a friend of mine. Upon arrival I was pleasantly suprised by the repetoir of parts in his collection and my soon to be flash metallic silver 87gl with blue interior. We closed the deal. I couldn't wait to drive it through beautiful Pensylvania and across the border to Canada. After a few hours of driving my friend really wanted to stop to rest as we didn't get any sleep since the night before we left. I must have been in Farvergnugen heaven, could have driven all the home with out stopping. Since then my wife and I have gone on countless road trips around Ontario. Its been a joy to drive.. As far as maintenance 2 years ago did have to fix the 3/4 slider hub problem and an oil leak through the main seal. Other than that its been a very reliable vehicle and intend to keep it for a long time. Even though I have a Jetta and the diesel I find myself driving the bus more often than the other vehicles...I LOVE IT!

Mine is an 82 Westy which is my only means of transportation. I've had it for 2 years and it's been in the shop for only minor repairs. However, it's recently started acting up and is in dire need of a major overhaul! All in all, though, I have not had any massive problems. Trea

I'm wondering for how many of you your Vanagon is your main means of transportation, and you drive it 20,000+ miles per year. In the 2.5 years I've had my 91 Westy, I've had to put an awful lot of money into repairs, and am beginning to wonder if this vehicle just isn't suited for continual use and frequent long trips. I take pretty good care of my VW, but it is currently in the shop with a broken crankshaft on a engine that was rebuilt only 30k miles ago.

Are there Vanagon owners out there who log a lot of miles and don't have many problems?

- Greg
