I've owned six Vanagon since 1985 and have probably driven about 600,00 miles with them. I've had good luck with all. I still have my 87 Syncro camper which was bought new in 1988. It now has almost 180K on it and the engine is original including the head gaskets. It has traveled the east coast numerous times and a trip from New York to California, (1989). In 1993 it did a trip to Alaska. Turned 100,000 miles going from Anchorage to Denali. The transmission has had 4th gear replaced twice. I am on my third water pump, 2nd exhaust, 3rd set of tires, 2nd drive shaft. Front brakes replaced twice,(2nd time new rotors), rears replaced once. Also replaced alternator and starter. First battery lasted 6 years. Second one still going. This van has also been used for some towing. Except for the transmission and the seam/window frame rust, and the electrical glitches this van has proved very reliable. It has never been towed. I just checked the compression and did a leak down test last weekend. Cylinders 1, 2,3, 150 psi, #4 at 140. Leak down test showed loss at the rings. Uses (leaks) about 1 quart of Mobil-1, 15050 oil /2000 miles.

I'm wondering for how many of you your Vanagon is your main means of transportation, and you drive it 20,000+ miles per year. In the 2.5 years I've had my 91 Westy, I've had to put an awful lot of money into repairs, and am beginning to wonder if this vehicle just isn't suited for continual use and frequent long trips. I take pretty good care of my VW, but it is currently in the shop with a broken crankshaft on a engine that was rebuilt only 30k miles ago.

Are there Vanagon owners out there who log a lot of miles and don't have many problems?

- Greg
