mike: Now that's a nice list post. Fully informative with all the jazzy fringes. I did Something like you. Not a new engine, like I should have, but only rods and heads with a lot of extra parts whilst in there. I did put a new, NEW water pump in, and it leaks a tad, so....... I'm having gas mileage problems too. I believe mine might be the lifters as well. I had mine at the bostonbob .006" lash for a couple weeks. Then I went in there and looked at them. They SEEMED solid, so I adjusted them. I put a quarter turn on each. But I noted after a few seconds the set screws backed off as if at zero lash. Does that mean my lifters are spongy? I tried prying (within reason) on the rockers to check the lifter for give and they seemed solid. SO I went ahead and kept everything set at 1/4 turn. BTW, compression is normal save the #4 which is HIGH (as it was before the rebuild--new rings, hone!), all the others were in the 155 zone +/- 5.

I took it to a shop a couple weeks back to get the injection checked out. THe engine had been sluggish "off the line" (flooding??-so I thought)and I contributed it along with poor gas mileage (13-15) to an injection problem. THe shop came up with a clogged cat convertor diagnosis. I got the cat in the mail yesterday. Upon yanking the old cat, I found they both looked identical (almost). No clog from what I could see. I wasn't about to get in to yet another return debacle with the b.depot, so I put the new cat in to be sure. As far as I can tell, there's not a change. I swear the engine is running hotter than it should. Plus I'm kinda mad at the shop, since they didn't fix the problem. I am not passing emissions according to them, so they came up with the cat convertor *somehow*. I'll be able to know for sure at the next fill up about my gas mileage, but I'm guessing there will be the same story.

ANYONE heard this one before? Any guesses? Mike, I'm guessing that both our probs could be valve related, but I want to run it by the list for feed back. I what can we do about these spongy lifters. HOW is running them at .006 going to solve this again? WHat if they don't get solid? I found the valve adjust ritual to be a PITA big time! I''m not really into doing that again unless I have to. Like I said, I didn't find any "spongy lifter" as I did during the rebuild, but it could have been the way I struggled to get in there, close to all those hot pipes! I could do a compression check again, but that's just going to tell me about the "closed valve" story, right? I wish I knew if the valves were opening up enough. Anyone? ANyone?

Mike, as for your oil leak, thats not good and the mechanic should fix that as part of a guarantee.

thanks for any insight! Brian Cochran 84 westy _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
