The Champagne Edition vehicles were VW's early attempt at "late in the year" marketing of the current model year. It would be the precursor to the Wolfsburg Editions. The entire line-up of bugs, busses and campers got this treatment. Some items such as paint and cosmetic add-ons like chrome bumpers were exclusive to the line

It was effective way to deplete the years supply of vehicles while they get ready for the following year's models.
