Too much current may be flowing thru the points for some reason, perhaps a bad coil. I'm not sure if that system uses a resistor wire in the primary circuit to limit the current; might be worth investigating. I am not familiar with a "Pertronix", but if it is an electronic system, it sounds like a good idea. Mechanical points will always be troublesome eventually.
