I too had this problem when I first acquired my 87
Westy. The first time I tried to get the tank filled, the auto-stop valve
allowed all the propane to leak out (original equipment). I tried to clean and
lube the old valve, but to no avail. A local RV house recommended replacing the
original auto-stop valve with a new fill valve and a 10% valve (some call it a
80% valve, i.e. 80% full). They also told me that that there had been some
catastrophic failures of these original units and that they were no longer
available? At any rate, these are two separate components which replace
the factory combination. The previous owner also cautioned me to be sure
that the person filling the tank does not over the tank! This is sound advice!
Nearly every time I get the tank filled now, I am very specific in requesting no
more than 2 gallons of propane (close enough to full) to prevent any problems.
And this is usually after I have exhausted my supply.
BTW, anyone else have trouble getting these
vehicles' propane tanks filled? I have been refused by several propane dealers
in my area of so cal- most do not want the liability. Also, anyone see a
gauge for our applications? It would be nice to know when the fuel supply is
getting low! Thanks!

Hi folks,
I was mistaken with my
previous inquiry. I thought it was my regulator that was the problem, but it is
the Auto - Stop fill valve that is leaking. There are four screws that you can
remove to take off the half of the fill valve that contains the outage valve.
When you do this you expose a rubber o - ring that I think is the source of the
leak.
Has anyone had this
problem and do you know where I can get another o - ring. I tried the local
propane dealer as well as several RV dealers.
The manufacturer of the fill valve is Auto Stop
Corporation and I think the model # is 430 ( It was somewhat corroded and hard
to read)
I appologize about the previous errant diagnosis
by me and I thank all those that responded.
