The GX engine makes about 85 hp and it is CIS fuel injection - a pretty
simple system to wire up if you have the Bentley manual in front of you. If
you want to farm out the wiring part of the project please let me know, I
would be more than happy to assist.
The accelerator cable is very simple. I use the $0.50 per meter stuff you
get at the hardware store along with some special cable crimps that I have
and make my own. Cut the cable a few cm away from the front of the cable
(at the pedal) and get the cable from the donor car and cut it a few cm from
the throttle valve. Run the new cable you got from the hardware store and
splice it in there. The sheath from the Golf cable can be used from the bit
from the top of the transmission to where it usually terminates on the Golf
engine. 15 minute job once you have done it!
Just a note on the engine... if your budget allows you may want to find a JH
engine from a Scirocco / Cabriolet / Rabbit GTI as it makes about 5 to 10
more HP according to whose books you read. Same IF system, just bigger
valves make up the difference.

I just got rid the free diesel that I stripped last week, and my 87'GL
replaced it that same day. I just got a free 85 golf engine(code GX) and
wiring harness, so the project to starting to make some headway, parts wise
at least! I aquired an intake and exhaust manifold from a 82 Quantom wagon
also. so now it's time to start swapping it all. Any insight on wiring or
what else may be a problem(accelerator cable?) would be helpfull.
thanks again.
