Well, here is my findings, on the air shock installation. The only modification, needed to use the air shock, is a longer top mounting bolt, to accomidate spacers on the inside of the shock, to clear the wheel well. Mind you, I installed them on my Type- 2, but the application is the same. The stock shock bolt is 4" long on the top, so I added 2" inch longer bolt, with 4, 12mm washers to the inside of the shock mount so it would clear the wheel well. Pretty simple. The shocks I installed are for an 86 syncro, Gabriel part number 39215. Will work well on a sagging butted Vanagon. Did work well on Clementie for about 20 minutes. The type -2's have torsion bars, and she was sagging pretty good, in her butt. When I leveled her out with the air shocks, it must have cranked the torsion bars back to where they should be a little too much, and after hitting one of Illinois finer pot holes on the expressay, I think I fractuered a torsion bar. A lot of banging coming from the right rear wheel area after hyper extending the suspension when going through dips, wallows, bumps. I will prevail on this minor set-back.!! But like I said, the air shocks will work well, on the Vanagon rear suspension with the coil springs. ______________ |[ ] [ ] [ ]\ | | | | ||-(())----(())-|
