I have an '89 2.1 which has a bad ECU, AFM and fuel pressure reg. (all verified with friends van), and have access to a stock carb setup from a European Vanagon. I plan to make the swap for about 6 months until I gather up some good Digi parts. The labor is mine so that's not an issue. I have thought of the following which may need addressed: Fuel Pump, needs one with less delivery psi...perhaps a type 4 mechanical? Distributor, disconnect the Hall sender and keep it? Is it mechanical? Fuel return, plug it for now? Wiring, tuck it away for now? My concerns are the systems which I need to keep; do they run through/depend on the ECU? ...oil pressure system, temp gauge system? Any thoughts? Surely this isn't crazy, the setup I'm contemplating is bone stock VW. I realize the Digi is more efficient, this is a short term solution, I expect fuel mileage to drop and maybe a small hp increase and my state does not smog test (yet), so what dya think?? crazy german man in midwest
