The good people who designed the engine do not live in a vacuum, so I am sure the considered all things when they decided to use an 87 C. T-stat. Anyway, I have a vague recollection of studying thermodynamics back in the Dark Ages. Other than the definition of entropy and enthalpy, one thing I recall is that, although nonlinear, there is a direct relationship between temperature differential and heat transfer; the greater the temperature differential, the greater the rate of heat transfer.
