thanks for your messages. turns out three bolts were sheared, and three not. i was able to get one in with a 6mm allen key, and decided that's not enough to drive it. so AAA came and got me and towed me (ass in the air; i have not put my front drive shaft in yet, or i would still have been driving it, front wheel drive!) to volks cafe.

peter is very good. he's going to make sure that joint is fine, and then torque the other five down to spec. he says people come in all the time with this on their vanagons after they've had cv work done and the folks don't retighten properly. he'll tighten them properly.

and phaedra, re the parts...you didn't have to do that...but thanks.
